Tall and complex structures are often best dealt with by the controlled use of explosives.

Although, care needs to be exercised to control debris and protective measures taken to ensure no damage is caused by vibration to adjacent buildings and underground services the controlled use of explosives have been used to fell a number of structures during the course of works for British Coal.

Careful planning and structural calculations resulted in a detailed Method Statement being approved prior to the structures being pre-weakened, drilled and charged.

Temporary closures were obtained on the adjacent roads and railway line and the exclusion zone heavily manned.

The resultant steel was processed for commercial disposal and reinforced concrete broken up using hydraulic breakers and pulverizors.
